At 81 1/2 inches, that was 1/2 inch too wide. That was even wider than a Lincoln. However the cars were able to be produced as the Federal Dept. of
Transportation granted the exemption because Ford agreed to make the following year's cars at 81" wide or less.

It was not a prototype 1960 Ford, but all of the 1960 Fords were this wide.

The longest Ford was the 1978 LTD model.
