Ja kas R või RB saab kindlaks teha nii:
BIG BLOCK: Locating the I.D. pad on big blocks is the easiest way to distinguish a "B" engine from an "RB" engine. On "B" engines the I.D. pad is located on the passenger's side of the engine just below the cylinder head next to the distributor base; on "RB" or Hemi engines the I.D. pad is located on top of the block directly in front of the the intake manifold valley pan, next to the distributor base toward the driver's side.

The engine size is also cast in to the cylinder block, if i remember correctly it's on the drivers side below the cylinder deck; there is the casting date for example 19-11-73-400 or 440- and one digit after that which indicates the number of repairs done to the casting mold. |

Mopari BB'del on vasaku silindrirea tagaküljel lihvitud koht, kuhu on sisse pressitud mootori mark. Minu omal näiteks 4T400, sama peaks ka sellel mootoril olema. 400 näitab töömahtu. |

400 is a good engine. It's a big bore and short stroke (4.34" x 3.38") engine that can really be made to turn some serious rpm. My old Dart had a budget 400 engine last summer and run over 190 km/h speed in the 1/4 mile. the stock iron heads ports also are about the "right" size" for a hopped up 400. It's also relatively simple to install a 440 crank in to a 400 block, you can get the same displacement in a smaller package and lighter moving parts. And the 400 block can handle bigger hp numbers than a 400 block + it has stiffer cylinder walls. The trick here is, that you may be able to a 440 crank with hurt main bearings; just ground them smaller and it will fit in a 400 block. And if the rod journals are hurt, you can ground them down too and use chevy aftermarket rods, offset grinding for that will give you about 470 cu in. And of course there are longer stroke aftermarket cranks & heads available too. We will be in the dyno next saturday with a worked out street 400 BB chrysler.
Production of the big blocks ended in '78, so your friends '82 is not stock. I believe '82 fury is already based on M-body, basically the same chassis as in a Volare / Aspen. |

Yes, it's M-body with non-original 400cid. The car is bought as project and only 60% complete. |

Äkki vaatad seda numbrit veelkord.
Tegin kiire otsingu vastavatelt netilehtedelt ja uurisin ka raamatu "Big-block Mopar performace" vastavaid tabeleid ja lähim castingu number sinu omale oli 3698830-440 (440 cid, 1973-78 RB block, Industrial) ehk siis äkki on see esimene 8 hoopis 9?

Sa ikka vaata need numbrid uuesti üle, et poleks seda "ta vist on..."
Antud juhul peaks olema tegemist siis:
440cid V8 (1973-1978) "RB"
1973 aastal toodetud "stock" mootoril 280 hp. Juhul kui oli "six pack" siis 330 hp.-d Järgnevatel aastatel hakkas hobujõu rating langema...

I wouldn't pay much attention to the horsepower figures. The measuring standard changed in 1972 and the horsepower level in all engines came down to a more realistic level, the changes in the engines weren't that big. In a 400, '73 was the first year for a cast crank. If you have the damper, there should be a text "for 440 cast crank only", it should be externally balanced with the cast crank. However, most of the '73 440's still had forged cranks. Even some of these were externally balanced, the HP versions were equipped with heavier "six pack" rods. There is an identification pad in the block in front of the lifter valley pan rail, slightly right from the center. There is some stampings that will tell how the engine came from the factory.
Never the less, the cast crank is good for about 600 hp and practically all 400's are equal as far as teh power producing potential goes. Heads are the same, blocks are the same etc; with only a compression and a cam change you can bring the performance up to the level of the musclecar years magnum engines.
